Pivoting My Career at 30...

Introduction

Turning 30 has been a pivotal moment in my life, both personally and professionally. After much reflection, I’ve decided to embark on a significant career shift. While it took eight months of deep introspection and difficult conversations with myself, I’m excited to share my journey with you and offer insights that might help those of you who are also navigating a career transition!!

The Journey So Far

For over six years, I’ve been dedicated to building Recloseted, a sustainable fashion consultancy I founded. This business has brought me immense joy and growth, but recently, I’ve realized that I’ve outgrown both the business and its current model. It’s been a challenging process to accept this, but I’ve finally acknowledged that it’s time for a change.

Why I’m Pivoting

Our careers are a significant part of our lives, and I believe they should serve us as much as we serve them. For a long time, I focused solely on what Recloseted needed, often at the expense of my own needs. Two exercises helped me realize this:

  1. A Self-Assessment: I listed what Recloseted needed versus what I needed as an entrepreneur. This exercise clearly highlighted to me that Recloseted was no longer serving me. I wasn’t growing, learning, or earning what I needed to sustain myself.

  2. The Book "Quit" by Annie Duke: This book provided a refreshing perspective on quitting, emphasizing the importance of knowing when to let go before it’s too late. It helped me see that sometimes perseverance down the wrong path can be more damaging than beneficial.

Deciding to pivot wasn’t easy, especially when it involves something as personal as your own business. There’s a level of grief and fear associated with letting go of a vision you’ve nurtured for years. However, I’m learning to view this transition not as a failure but as an opportunity for growth and new beginnings.

What’s Next?

While I’m still figuring out the details of my next steps, I’m excited about the possibilities. My diverse experiences and skills have opened up many potential paths, and I’m using my past career pivots as a guide for my future direction. Reflecting on my journey, I see how every twist and turn has contributed to my growth, and I’m confident that this next chapter will be just as rewarding.

Closing Thoughts

If you’re also considering a career pivot, remember that it’s okay to change direction. Face those hard truths, have the necessary conversations, and prioritize your well-being. The journey may be challenging, but it’s ultimately about creating a career and life that fulfill you.
